The Up Side of Small Business Leadership

The Up Side of Small Business Leadership

I’ve looked at the down side of shouldering the emotional responsibly for a business.  But, like so many things one reads, there is also another point of view.  This point of view offers various studies proving the opposite truth, i.e. small business leaders and their employees are happier and healthier than others.

An article from June 2016 Small Business Labs reported. “Only 27 percent of employees at large companies are happy at work. This is substantially lower than the 43 percent of small business employees who report being happy at work.”

I notice that this happy news overlooks the fact that over 50% of people, no matter their role, are unhappy at work.  All the more reason to do some self-coaching around your career choices.

Still:

“The 2016 MBO Partners State of Independence study reports that 81 percent of independent workers report being happier since they became independent and 60% report being healthier.

What’s more, other studies also consistently report the self-employed are more engaged, more satisfied and happier with work than those in traditional jobs.

If you are seriously considering building your own business, you will not be surprised to learn the reasons for this increased happiness have to do with:

Lack of Bureaucracy

Small businesses need systems and processes but only to the extent that a repeatable process allows for productivity.  When producing a value-added product, responding to customer needs and fulfilling the company mission becomes secondary to ticking off a checklist, innovation, motivation and creativity are lost.

More Autonomy

For a visionary and motivated entrepreneur, success is often about autonomy and the opportunity to do meaningful work. In contrast, corporate work culture often measures success by net worth or numbers of subordinates.  Which of these motivating values will most enhance your life?

Greater Flexibility

In a recent discussion of millennials the panelist claimed, “94 percent of workers–almost a statistical ubiquity—curtailed their work lives to care for a child or family member said they were glad they did it,”

Conclusion

A good life is not about money, status or power.  Lasting happiness comes from strong relationships, vibrant health, autonomy and engagement.  Whether you build your own business or choose to remain in your job, make your own personal happiness your most important goal.
