Fear: The Consequence of Inaction

“Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.”

I am ready to relaunch my business coaching business!

Does the thought of putting myself out there make me uncomfortable? Oh yes!

So, with this blog post I am taking a bit of my own advice and confronting my fears.

Two Years of Procrastination

I am (no I should say – I was) retired. These days, I live in the mountains of Ecuador; a country with a comfortable climate, affordable, quality life style and blissfully devoid of the American cultural imperative to achieve. Yet, after two years consumed by travel and the intricacies of expatriate relocation, I find I am ready to do something more meaningful.

I’ve explored the possibilities of teaching English to Ecuadorian school children or rescuing street dogs but in the end, I decided to acquiesce to my hard-won self-knowledge and do what I know suits my gifts and my personality.

I am ready to relaunch my business coaching business! Just as soon as I overcome my fears.

Inaction Breeds Doubt and Fear

I am afraid that relaunching my business will eat into my leisure time and create stress in my life. A life that, admittedly, has come to bore me, but then who ever asked us humans to be rational.

I am afraid of exposing myself to internet tolls and, more likely, legitimate feedback and criticism.

I am afraid no one will care.

I am afraid of failure.

I am afraid of success.

I am just plain afraid.

So, with this blog post I am taking a bit of my own advice and confronting my fears.

According to David Rock, Director of theNeuroLeadership Instituteandone of my teachers, our basic human fears have changed. Now that predatory animals are increasingly uncommon in our daily lives, our basic human fear is of our social experiences, our social status, being autonomous (think independent and free), having personal connections and being treated fairly. The trouble is, because of our primitive ancestral brains, we tend to react to these commonsocial threats as if they were lions. We respond to social threats with the same flight or fight response we used to use to run from lions in the veld.

My point?

Changing your familiar, low stress life for the adventure of starting a new business is a threat with many associated social fears.

Your(and my)fears are real but not as life threatening as they seem. Fear does not need to be a show stopper.

The key to taking the action you want is to feel the fear and do it anyway.

There are neuroscience based ways to overcome our natural, human fears and begin moving forward. I will share some techniques in my upcoming posts. Meanwhile…
